Eco-Nomic Gift Giving
As a single parent with a modest income, big family and large group of friends I had to become very creative to pull off giving without busting my budget. And now, as a society, we have become more aware of the planet and our obligation to the earth and that adds another dimension to our gift giving.
Gift giving unites people and can be an enjoyable experience but can also be about as much fun as a root canal. The tradition has been with us since Mr. Caveman drug a bloody carcass into the family cave and happily presented it to Mrs. Caveman and it will continue into the future. The more thoughtful and responsible amongst us will do so in new way. It's imperative we not clutter the earth with any more than is necessary. Adhering to a green gifting policy may seem like a small gesture in comparison to some of the more pressing global issues, but every little bit helps. And as these green habits are instituted in families they will be passed on to our children, making them greener givers.
Many of us are fighting materialism in our society. We are mounting a battle against the tendency toward a throw away society. When we are drawn into this ritual of gift giving, willingly or unwillingly, we can be smarter, more savvy and make the experience more meaningful for us, the givers as well as the receivers.
