I'm so proud of my son and his wife. Last weekend they had a House Warming party to celebrate the ownership of their first home. It was a lovely get-together that included family, friends and work mates. With C and MA's close watch on the crowd everyone got a personal tour, introductions, good food and beverages. I was very impressed with how they managed so many people with such grace. I also have a great deal of respect for how they combined patience and planning into the purchase and now the caring for their house.
So this happy occurrence brings me to the subject of this blog. Do we need to bring a gift to a House Warming party? Certainly not a gift, if you are not inclined, but a congratulations card would be nice or a bottle of wine or something home-made. If you know the family and their needs and want to buy a gift...sure...why not. Just make sure they have a desire or need for it. People don't need more stuff that isn't necessary!
If you are unsure of the needs of the new home owners and want to get them something then perhaps a gift card to a home improvement store or a card that can be used any place. I'm sure a gift card would be greatly appreciated especially by those that are starting out in their first home.
I had fun with my gift because my son, his wife and I all share a great love of the movie It's a Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. There is a scene where Donna Reed is welcoming a family into their new home made possible by Jimmy Stewart's character's Building and Loan. She is holding a loaf of bread, salt and a bottle of wine. As she holds each one up she says:
That this house may never know hunger.
That life may always have flavor.
That joy and prosperity may reign forever.
Enter the Martini Castle!
I put a loaf of rustic bread, salt in a pretty little container and a bottle of wine in an inexpensive basket lined with an inexpensive tea towel and wrote the above in a card. As I am quite close to this particular couple I also included a gift card.
I have done this before, sans gift card, and always get a great response from the recipients even if they are not familiar with the movie. And if you haven't seen the movie...do! It warms the heart.
